A number of large asteroids pass by Earth from June 2 to 4, respectively, but do not pose a danger to our planet.

Ƭaccording to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JƤL), one of 4 asteroids named 2023KS2 brushed past Earth on June 2, when the 3 remaining asteroids were: 2023 HO18, 2023 JR2 and 2023 JE5 will fly over two days later, Newsweek news.

Asteroids are chunks of rock and ice floating around the solar system, many of which are remnants of planet formation. “Asteroids are pieces of planets that orbit the Sun in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. However, due to their relatively small size, asteroids are very sensitive to impacts and develop orbits that cross planets.”director of the Spaceguard Center observatory in the UK, said.

Asteroid 2023 KS2 has a diameter of 20.7m while the sizes of asteroids 2023 HO18, 2023 JR2 and 2023 JƐ5 are 30.2,36,6,33.5m respectively. The Boeing 737 is approximately 28.6 meters long. These asteroids passed Earth at distances of 3,942,892 km (2023 KЅ2), 6,517,843 km (2023 JR2) and 6,743,151 km (2023 JƐ5). Compared to them, 2023 HO18 flies much closer (466.709 km), which is 1.2 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. For comparison, Venus, the closest planet to Earth, flies 61.2 million kilometers from Earth in its vicinity.

Previously, NASA estimated there were around 1.1 million asteroids in the solar system, with the vast majority located in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. The largest of these are the asteroids Ϲeres and Vesta, with diameters of 945 km and 529 km, respectively.

Sometimes ringed asteroids are pushed into the inner solar system by gravitational interactions with Jupiter, causing them to pass through Earth’s orbit. They are classified as “Near-Earth object” (NEO) if it is 48.3 million km or less from Earth’s orbit. NĄSA identifies more than 31,000 NEOs. EOs that are 7.4 million km from Earth’s orbit and have a diameter of more than 140 m are called “potentially dangerous objects”. Accordingly, there are 2,300 asteroids in this group. According to the classification above, all of the asteroids that passed Earth this weekend were EOs, but not in the group. “dangerous” because it’s not big enough.

Data from the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) shows that four large asteroids the size of an airplane are unlikely to collide with Earth, the risk of collision at 2023 JƐ5 is only 0.000002. NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office has not detected any dangerous objects that could collide with Earth in the next 100 years.
