This trip to the moon project is called DearMoon founded by billionaire Maezawa and first announced in 2018. All crew expenses will be financed by him.
This billionaire said that space travel will help explore the limits of all creative activities. This is why he prioritized inviting artists to participate. Initially, he planned to send out invitations to people he wanted and felt had potential. However, Maezawa then opened a competition that contestants could register for fair participation through an online website.
In the end, the 8 people selected were artists with multiple talents and very different fields. The list includes: Rapper TOP of the K-pop group Big Bang, DJ and electronic music producer Steve Aoki, American YouTuber Tim Dodd, Czech choreographer Yemi AD, Irish photographer Rhiannon Adam, American filmmaker Brendan Hall, Indian actor Dev Joshi and British photographer Karim Iliya.
Among the 8 people, TOP is a famous name among young people. His real name is Choi Seung Hyun, a rapper from the K-pop group Big Bang. Having exceeded one million registrants from 249 countries and territories, TOP had the honor of being chosen for this trip.
On the morning of December 9, he posted a video confirming his participation in DearMoon: “I am very honored to have been chosen as a crew member this time. Since I was a child, I have always dreamed of space and the moon. I hope I will have many experiences and learn new things.
He also said that he was not afraid but felt proud. “I’m very excited about becoming a Korean on the Moon this time.”
Additionally, the roster also has two reserve members, skier Kaitlyn Farrington (United States) and dancer Miu (Japan).
In a video announcing the trip on YouTube, billionaire Maezawa said: “I hope that each member of the crew will realize their own responsibility at the end of the journey. I don’t ask them anything. I just hope that the participants will have many experiences, thus bringing the best of themselves to the Earth and to humanity.
According to the crew’s mission profile on the DearMoon website, the Earth-Moon round trip on Spatialship (the next generation space transportation system from the technology company SpaceX), will last 8 days, from the moment of launch to the moment of return to Earth (including three days in orbit around the Moon). When completed, Starship will be the most powerful rocket ever built.
Although SpaceX’s Starship system has been tested in the atmosphere and landed successfully, the company has yet to actually perform a flight into orbit. Although founder Elon Musk has repeatedly promised that this will happen by the end of 2022.
Last December, billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, founder of Japan’s largest online fashion mall, flew to the International Space Station (ISS) with cinematographer Yozo Hirano and Russian astronauts aboard the craft Soyuz spacecraft for 12 days. The cost of the trip is 10 billion yen, equivalent to 1.7 trillion VND.
