August 4 – New Moon
The Moon will be on the same side of the Sun as Earth and will not be visible in the night sky. This stage appears at 6:15 p.m. (Vietnam time). This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects like galaxies and star clusters, as there is no moonlight to interfere.
August 12 and 13: Perseid meteor shower
The Perseids are one of the most beautiful meteor showers to watch, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at peak times. It was produced by the Swift-Tuttle comet, discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing large numbers of bright meteors. The meteor shower occurs every year from July 17 to August 24. This year, the peak occurs on the night of August 11 and in the morning of August 12. The first half-moon will obscure some of the fainter meteors in the early evening. But the Moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving dark skies for what could be an early morning stellar show. Best viewing will be from a dark place after midnight. The meteor will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but could appear anywhere in the sky.
August 20 – Full Moon, Blue Moon
The Moon will be on the opposite side of the Earth while the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurred at 01:27 (Vietnam time). This full moon was called the Sturgeon Moon by early Native American tribes because large sturgeon from the Great Lakes and other large lakes were easier to catch at this time of year. This moon is also known as the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon. Because it is the third of four full moons this season, it is called a blue moon. This rare calendar event only occurs every few years, hence the term “once in a blue moon.” Normally, there are only three full moons per season of the year. However, because the full moon cycle occurs every 29.53 days, a season will sometimes have four full moons. The additional full moon during the season is called a blue moon. Blue moons appear on average every 2.7 years.
