Around the coolest and most common type of star in the galaxy containing Earth, scientists have discovered many planets of the same type and size as Earth. But new research shows they might not bring good news.
The study has just been published above Letters from astrophysical journals examined one The planet is called GJ 1252b. Ƭheo NASA, GJ 1252b is a rocky planet – which is the same type as Earth – and belongs to a group of similar sizes, with a mass only 1.32 times that of Earth.
GJ 1252b bathed in red light GJ 1252, is a red dwarf star located 66 light years from Earth. The distance between the planet and the parent star, however, is only 0.00915 times the distance between Earth and the Sun. Red dwarfs are much cooler than the Sun So, with the above properties, GJ 1252b is still an object of attention in the hunt for extraterrestrial life.

But new research results have brought bad news: scientists firmly believe that GJ 1252b has no atmosphere at allone of the essential conditions for life to be protected from the harmful impacts of the universe and to have a chance to exist and evolve.
After being discovered in 2020, calculations of the distance between GJ 1252b and the parent star as well as the temperature of the parent star once showed that the possibility of this planet being habitable was almost zero because it must be very hot , but because of many Earth-like properties, it still has excellent conditions to become a “laboratory”.
Because if another planet is found like GJ 1252b but it is located farther from the parent star or has a cooler parent star, astronomers believe it will be a promised land for life. The new study rejects this expectation and says something like GJ 1252b would not be viable, even if it were colder.
Dr Michelle Hill of the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside – USA), co-author of the study, said the main cause was Cool Star Type but planets like GJ 1252b, again has a strong radiation compared to the Sun.
This is the second sad news, because red dwarfs are the most common type of star in the galaxy containing the Milky Way, accounting for perhaps as many as 75% of stars.
Computer models based on data collected by observatories around the world show that the red dwarf GJ 1252 is powerful enough to “crop” its planet, taking away – literally – its entire atmosphere.
Cite research and reviews PHYSICS said Earth also lost some of its atmosphere relative to the Sun, but other carbon cycles quickly compensated. However, a planet too close to the star will not ensure this compensation cycle. It continues to disappear until it reaches 0.
In our solar system, this is the fate of Mercury. However, although it is hotter, the Sun’s radiation is somewhat less intense, so Mercury still has a thin atmosphere.
GJ 1252b is bare. This also contributes to the increased daytime surface temperature of this locked planet, which can reach more than 1,200 degrees Celsius. And even though the nighttime surface is cooler, it is difficult to survive without a protective atmosphere.
“The planet could have 700 times more carbon than Earth but still have no atmosphere” – Dr. Hill confirmed.
However, this discovery is not entirely bad news for planetary scientists. With more than 5,000 exoplanets discovered, NASA probably can’t examine each one in detail, even with the most capable telescopes.
This discovery will help scientists significantly narrow the scope of research and more precisely define a “Earth 2.0” potential.
