A car-sized asteroid was discovered on the same day as an object flying past Earth at a distance closer than large telecommunications satellites in geosynchronous orbit.

The Catalina Sky Survey observatory in Arizona first discovered the asteroid on December 17, when it was just 21,000 km from Earth, much closer than the altitude of the communications satellite, which is 35,786 km. If asteroid named 2022 YO1 Crashing directly into Earth, it will most likely cause very little damage and burn up almost completely in the atmosphere. However, it can create a fireball. For comparison, the meteorite that exploded over Russia in 2013 blew out thousands of windows with an estimated diameter of around 40m, or about 10 times the size of 2022 YO1.
2022 YO1 ranks 6th among the asteroids flying closest to Earth this year. It’s a sign that astronomers are getting better at detecting more flying objects in environments closer to Earth. Models of the internal solar system flight path of 2022 YO1 show that it will fly past Earth again in 2024.
While astronomers continue to classify and track more asteroids and comets, there are relatively few observatories in the Southern Hemisphere. NASA hopes to solve the problem with the NEO Surveyor mission launched in June 2028.
NASA estimates that there are about 1.1 million asteroids in the solar system, most located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids hurtling toward Earth’s orbit could be ejected due to collisions in the belt or be affected by gravitational interactions with larger bodies like Jupiter. Many asteroids are classified into groups near-Earth object (NEO) due to its proximity to the planet. Some NEOs are classified as potentially hazardous objects if they are within 7.4 million kilometers of Earth’s orbit and have a diameter greater than 140 m.
