The CARMENES planet-hunting project surprised scientists by discovering that a tenth of newly discovered planets showed signs of liquid water.

Theo Sky and telescope, dựán CARMENES based on the instrument of the same name located on the Calar Alto Observatory telescope in Spain. It includes two spectrometers: one that collects light in the visible region and one that operates in the infrared region.
The report has just been published in a scientific journal Astronomy and astrophysics presented CARMENES’ achievements from 2016 to present, including “enormous” data on the discovery of 33 completely new planets, as well as the identification of another 26 planets from previous signs of suspect planets.
More surprisingly, among these, we find 6 planets described as “habitable”that is to say a rocky planet similar to Earth, has the necessary elements for water to be stored in liquid form like rivers, lakes, oceans… on our planet.
Another thing worth expecting is that all of the planets identified by CARMEMES are only within a 60 light-year radius of Earth, a distance far enough for scientists to learn more about them at help from deeper specialized tools.
According to scientist Ignasi Ribas of the Institute of Space Sciences and the Institute of Space Research of Catalonia (Spain), member of the CARMENE project, for stars believed to carry planets, they determined on average 1.4 planets around each star, an exceptionally high number. high ratio.
Among the planets found, there are a total of 6 planets similar to Jupiter and with a mass 50 times that of Earth, 10 planets similar to Neptune with a mass 10 to 50 times that of Earth and 43 super -Lands with a mass volume up to 10 times greater than that of Earth.
