Southern Ring Nebula located in the Milky Way about 2,000 light years from Earth, it was previously thought to contain 2 stars. A star nestled in the heart of the Southeast Ring Nebula white dwarf star When dying, many streams of gas and dust are emitted for thousands of years, and then these streams of gas and dust form the surrounding clouds.
Philippe Amram, an astrophysicist at the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory, said this two-star system is common in the Milky Way but is not an atypical structure of the Southern Ring Nebula. He used observations from the Webb telescope to uncover other mysteries of the Southern Ring Nebula.
By analyzing data from the Webb telescope’s infrared cameras, the researchers say they have found evidence of the presence of at least two other stars inside the Southern Ring Nebula, with a diameter equivalent to 1 meter, i.e. 500 times the distance between the Sun and Pluto.
Although this pair of new stars is slightly further away than the white dwarf and its companion, these four stars, or perhaps five, are at the center of the Southern Ring Nebula.
Mr. Amram explained that these stars are close enough to interact with each other and that the energy exchange between them creates the strange shape of the Southern Ring Nebula.
The Web Telescope, operational since July, has provided an unprecedented amount of data, and scientists hope the giant telescope will usher in a new era of discovery.
The research was published in the journal Nature Astronomy on December 8.
