Inspired by the edges, the team of experts simulated it in the laboratory and developed a soft silicone ball. They discovered that the ridge pattern can help “grasp” small objects such as diamonds, blueberries or heart-shaped candies, thanks to a property called chirality (asymmetry).
The research team said the new device could advance the design of a robot capable of cleaning up small pieces of space debris.. “A robotic arm equipped with a spherical gripper can collect small particles of space debris with high precision”, said Xu.
