Scientists first detected the element terbium in the atmosphere of KELT-9b, which has an average temperature of 4,000 degrees Celsius and is one of the hottest exoplanets on record.

KELT-9b has an average temperature of 4,000 degrees Celsius, orbiting host star KELT-9 about 670 light-years from Earth. This exoplanet has always been an object of interest for astronomers since its discovery in 2016.
In a new study published in the journal Astronomy and astrophysicsscientists first discovered rare earth terbium in the atmosphere of KELT-9b.
“We developed a new method to collect more detailed information. Through this method, we discovered 7 elements, including terbium, a rare substance that has never been found in the atmosphere of any exoplanet“said Sicholas Borsato, a PhD student in astrophysics at Lund University and a member of the research team.

Terbium, a rare earth metal, was found in the atmosphere of KELT-9b.
Teriium, a rare earth metal, was found in the atmosphere of KELT-9b.
Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander discovered terium at the Ytterby mine in the Stockholm archipelago in 1843. Cerbium is rare and 99% of the world’s terium production takes place at the Bayan Obo mine in Inner Mongolia.
Normally, exoplanets are detected by measuring the brightness of stars. As an exoplanet moves past its host star, the star’s luminosity decreases. Using the team’s new method, atmospheric signals from KELT-9b can be filtered out, opening up the possibility of learning more about the atmospheres of other planets.
“Knowing more about heavier elements helps us determine the age of exoplanets and how they form. The discovery of a heavy element in the atmosphere of a superhot exoplanet is a step forward in our understanding of the atmospheres of planets. understanding these planets, the better our chances of finding Earth 2.0 in the future.”said Orsato.
