The Indian startup has carried out a combustion test of the Agnilet rocket engine, the world’s first seamless 3D printed rocket, which can be used in a launch vehicle carrying 100 kg of cargo.
Agnikul Cosmosa space technology startup based in Chennai, India, successfully tested the world’s first seamless 3D printed rocket engine, Interesting engineering reported on November 10. The engine is called Agnilet, opened fire on the vertical test facility of the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launch Station (TERLS) of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram city. The test was supported by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the IN-SPACE agency.

Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM and Professor SR Chakravarthy founded Agnikul Cosmos in 2017 with the aim of making access to space cheaper. The new test aims to verify that the rocket engine can be built as a single piece of hardware.
Agnilet is designed and manufactured entirely in India. This rocket engine was successfully tested for the first time at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras in 2021. The latest test verifies the design and manufacturing method of the Agnikul Cosmos (this method has received a patent ). According to Agnikul Cosmos, this is a significant milestone for the 3D printing industry in India.

Agnikul Cosmos also recently opened Rocket Factory 1, India’s first rocket facility dedicated to 3D printing engines like the Agnilet on a large scale, at the IIT Madras Research Park. The contract signed under the IN-SPACe program also allows Agnikul Cosmos access to ISRO data and facilities to test its systems.
Earlier, Ravichandran had revealed that Agnilet will be used in the second stage of the Agniban launch vehicle. Agniban is capable of carrying cargo weighing up to 100 kg into low Earth orbit, at an altitude of around 700 km.
