Jupiter has become the planet with the most moons in the solar system with the discovery of 12 new moons.
Jupiter – the largest planet in the solar system – officially becomes the planet with the most moons in the system with 12 new moons confirmed in orbit. Science IFL reported on February 2. The total number of natural satellites of this gas giant planet has increased to 92surpassing the impressive number of Saturn’s satellites (83).

In fact, both planets probably have more moons, but finding them poses a significant challenge for astronomers. Moons so small that they have not yet been discovered can probably only be observed with extremely powerful telescopes whose fields of view are not wide enough to observe the entire Jupiter system, due to the bright light that Jupiter emits, which makes the problem more complicated.
12 new moons, now available Minor Planet Center (MPC) announced by Dr. Scott Sheppard who follows the trajectory over many years. Previously, he also discovered another series of Jupiter moons, announced in 2018.
Nine of the 12 new moons belong to the group of distant and retrograde moons around Jupiter, meaning they orbit Jupiter in the opposite direction to the inner moons. With their small size, these retrograde objects all take at least 550 days to complete an orbit.
The remaining 3 moons belong to the group of transiting moons. Two of them belong to the Himalia group, orbiting Jupiter at a distance of 11 to 12 million km, the remaining moon belongs to the Carpo group, about 17 million km from Jupiter.
Jupiter’s 12 new natural satellites take more than 340 days to complete their orbit and are too small to be officially named. They are thought to be the remains of much larger satellites that broke apart millions of years ago in a collision with other celestial bodies.
