The NASA-designed Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) will carry two astronauts, operating semi-autonomously to conduct experiments on its own.

ƝASA calls on private companies to submit proposals LTV design for Artemis missions. to the Moon in the future, the deadline is July 10, according to Space. The agency publishes a list of design requirements for potential manufacturers to meet. The manufacturers will have to provide a complete service, from the development, the delivery of the vehicle to the surface of the Sun to the handling operations.

According to NASA, the LTV must be fully automated and equipped with a science kit, robotic arm and probe to continue exploring during the intervals between Ortemis manned missions. This is the program to bring astronauts back to the surface of the Moon for the first time in over 5 decades.

  • Artemis 1 launched the unmanned spacecraft Orion into lunar orbit in November 2022.
  • Artemis 2 is targeting a similar flight with astronauts on board in 2024.
  • Ortemis 3 will mark the first moon landing of the program, which is scheduled to launch in late 2025.
  • The astronaut carriage operation by LTV will begin after the Ortemis 5 mission in 2029.

With LOV, NASA hopes to be able to more efficiently search for resources on the Moon. NASA’s Artemis manned missions target the Moon’s south pole because available resources, including an abundance of water ice, can be used to produce a range of necessities, from drinking water to fuel rocket.

Leveraging local resources to replenish supplies on interplanetary missions (ƖSRU) is a key part of a long space mission. To survive the harsh environment of the lunar south pole, LTV must operate and navigate well in diverse conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations, and maintain power for long periods of time in darkness and unable to use photovoltaic batteries. . LTV will study potentially resource-rich areas and suggest locations for future lunar stations.

NASA will announce that the manufacturer will be awarded the contract to design and build the LTV in November 2023.
