The mission was launched aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) superrocket at 1:47 p.m. on November 16, Hanoi time, to perform an unmanned flight around the Moon. The selfie photo of the Orion spacecraft’s hardware and the partially illuminated surface of the Earth was taken after more than 9 hours of flight of Artemis 1. At the time the photo was taken, the capsule was flying 92,000 km away. the Earth, or about 1/5 of the Earth. distance between the Earth and the Moon, at a speed of nearly 8,800 km/h.
“We haven’t seen this image of Earth from a spacecraft since 1972, after the last Apollo mission 50 years ago”shared NASA spokesperson Sandra Jones. “The image of a blue planet in the darkness of space will capture the imagination of a new generation: the Artemis generation.”
Outside of Earth, the selfie reveals parts of the Orion spacecraft in the left corner, including the orbital control system, the large engine that provides propulsion for flight around the Moon, and the solar panels. The vehicle is equipped with a total of 4 solar panels arranged in the shape of a cross.
“Each of Orion’s four solar arrays is equipped with a commercial camera mounted on the edge of the wing, carefully adapted for use in space, providing images from outside the spacecraft.”said David Melendrez, image integration team leader for the Orion program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Besides the selfie, NASA also shared images from inside the capsule, showing “passenger” Be Model Moonikin Campos is testing the orange flight suits that the astronauts will wear on board during their next flight. Additionally, the Callisto experiment, a collaboration between NASA and Amazon to test Alexa technology in space, also appears in the photo. One of Orion’s windows is also on display in the right corner of the frame.
According to NASA, there are two other cameras located inside the spacecraft, one facing a window in the front of the capsule and the other located in a hatch on the roof of the spacecraft, allowing monitor the vehicle’s separate launch arrest system. before and the process of parachute deployment when Orion landed on Earth.
The Artemis 1 mission will spend the next five days flying to the Moon. The capsule will come closest to the Moon on November 21, spending a few days in orbit around the Moon before reversing its direction. The 25-day mission will end on December 11.
