In the video released by the US Space Agency (SASA), astronaut Al Neyadi in a protective suit steps out into space from the ISS displaying the flag of the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by his American colleague Steve Bowen. The trip lasts approximately 7 hours on April 29, to replace some radio frequency equipment and prepare for the installation of solar panels.
“Becoming the first Arab astronaut to walk in space is a great honor and a great responsibility. I look forward to representing my country and continuing the special journey started by previous generations. The Indian Express quotes astronaut Al Neyadi writing on his personal Twitter page in early April after being selected to carry out the spacewalk mission.
The Indian Express said Astronaut Al Neyadi is the second UAE citizen to travel to the ISS, following fellow astronaut Hazza Ąl Mansouri’s 8-day mission in 2019. However, astronaut Al Neyadi is the first Arab citizen to carry out a long-term space mission (6 months) on the ISS, starting last March.
As the newest country to join the space exploration program, the UAE has quickly made its mark. In 2021, the country launched the unmanned Amal spacecraft to Mars as part of the Arab world’s first mission to discover “red planet”. Last year, the United Arab Emirates also sent the Rushed rover to the Moon.
