By analyzing the Winchcombe meteorite that fell in England, scientists discovered the origin of organic matter, including protein blocks.
On February 28, 2021, a fireball streaked across the UK sky, dropping rare meteorite fragments in the area near the town of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire.
It is known to be the first meteorite to fall in England in over 30 years, and the hunt for its fragments immediately took place.
Meteorites brought water to Earth
In the latest study published recently, scientists confirmed Winchcombe meteorite is one of the rarest ever to fall on Earth.

By analyzing the composition of the meteorite, a team of researchers from the Natural History Museum, University College London and the University of Glasgow discovered that Meteorites contain approximately 10% water by weightand its structure is very similar to that of water on Earth.
This raises the hypothesis that the type of meteorite – called chondritic carbonmust have played an important role in the water supply of our ancient planet.
“Carbonaceous chondrite is extremely reactive and decomposes rapidly in the Earth’s atmosphere, changing the original compositional structure of the mineral”the researchers said.
“However, in the case of the Winchcombe meteorite, it did not have enough time to react with the Earth’s environment. Therefore, the elements inside came 100% from outside.”pointed out the research team.
It’s not just water, it can be life
Not only does it contain water, but the meteorite sample also contains important carbon and nitrogen-based molecules. Among them there are Amino acids – the constituent elements of proteins.
According to scientists, these elements, as well as water, played an important role in the evolution of life on Earth.
“Life as we know it needs two important things to have any chance of appearing: water and organic molecules like amino acids – the Winchcombe meteorite has both.”, T.S. Luke Daly, representative of the University of Glasgow research team, shared.
“Meteorites of this type could be all that a developing planet needs if it has ambitions to develop life.”
The rapid recovery and analysis of the Winchcombe meteorite has made it one of the most pristine meteorites to date, giving scientists insight into the early composition of the solar system. The Sun existed 4.6 billion years ago.
According to the research team, samples of this extraordinary meteorite will be displayed publicly in several locations, including the Natural History Museum in London.
