These balloons made a long journey from Los Angeles to Doha, then were transported to Florida for the launch.
They were present on the Falcon 9 rocket during the first leg of the nearly 1,300 km journey, before being returned to Earth by SpaceX’s unmanned craft and landing a few hundred kilometers off the coast Atlantic. They were then flown by Qatar Airways to Famad International Airport, where they were handed over to World Cup officials.
Qatar Airways said: “It’s a legendary journey for a legendary tournament, from space to kickoff.”
Adidas used durable glue and ink to produce these balloons. His name is “Al Rihla”, means journey or excursion in Arabic.
However, this is not the first time football has been taken to space.
In 2018, Russian cosmonauts took an Adidas Telstar 18 balloon to the International Space Station (ISS) before returning to Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. He traveled 50 million kilometers in 74 days in space.
The following year, Adidas sent several balloons aboard the Dragon spacecraft contracted by the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for research at the ISS National Laboratory.
