NASA and ESA space probes have recorded cold plasma moving like a snake across the surface of the Sun at breakneck speed.
The snake plasma follows a particularly long magnetic field filament
The plasma in the snake follows a particularly long wire of magnetic field.
The Solar Orbiter spacecraft’s ultraviolet imaging device recorded the image of a “snake” sliding across the surface of the Sun, Cnet reported on November 14. In the time-lapse video recorded by the ship on September 5, the snake took 3 hours to crawl across the surface of the Sun at a breakneck speed of up to 170 km per second or 612,000 km/h.
The extremely high temperature of the Sun means that all gases in the atmosphere exist as plasma, an extremely hot state of matter. The snake is a stream of colder plasma, formed by the interaction between plasma and the invisible magnetic field of the Sun.
“The snake’s plasma follows a particularly long magnetic field filament, stretching from one side of the Sun to the other. What makes the snake so fascinating is that it comes from a very active region of the Sun. Sun. This area then erupted and launched billions of tons of plasma into space.”, wrote the European Space Agency (ESA) on its website. According to the ESA, the snake could be a “predecessor” of the eruption.
The Solar Orbiter is operated by ESA in cooperation with NASA. The spacecraft launched into space in early 2020, beginning its mission to study the Sun’s mysterious polar regions and record unprecedented images of this star. The spacecraft just celebrated its 1,000th day of operations in space earlier this month.
Snake and eruption data provided by Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar ships The data collected by NASA will help scientists better understand the activity of the Sun as well as how this star creates space weather phenomena that affect communications and navigation systems on Earth.
